BEREA CCDS 2025

Country dancing and other folk arts such as folk drama, storytelling, singing, and crafts are wonderful activities for teachers, youth leaders, recreation personnel, and everyone else!  Christmas Country Dance School, devoted to the practice and enjoyment of authentic folk material, helps everyone find usable materials for recreation programs, teaching situations, or personal benefit.  The week begins with an evening dance on December 26th.  Daily classes offer a variety of English, American, Irish, and Danish dance, music, song, and craft traditions.  Graded classes are offered, so beginners are given the special attention they need, while experts are provided with new insights and inspiration. Evenings are filled with dancing and Parlor, a time of sharing songs, stories, and special talents.  The week concludes with a gala New Year’s Eve dance.  The carefully selected staff generously give their time, knowledge, and experience to make the week one of the finest folk arts courses available.  Live music is used throughout the School, adding much to the pleasure and merriment.  Christmas School offers dance leadership courses for adults and a limited number of select teenagers.  Ages 12–17 accepted with parent or guardian.

Joe Tarter Announces Retirement as Executive Director of BCCDS; Theresa Lowder Appointed Interim Director

Berea, Kentucky — Mar. 2, 2025 — After more than 25 years of dedicated service, Joe Tarter, Executive Director of Berea Christmas Country Dance School (BCCDS), has announced his retirement, effective immediately. Joe has been a cornerstone of BCCDS since the 1990s, and while his leadership will be missed, he believes it’s the right time to step back.
“I am deeply thankful for the opportunity to serve BCCDS,” said Joe. “This community has always felt like family, and it has been an honor to contribute to its growth and success.”
Under Joe’s leadership, BCCDS flourished, with a focus on folk dance, folk arts, and building lasting community connections. His impact will continue to resonate within the organization for years to come.
The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Theresa Lowder has been appointed as Interim Executive Director. With years of experience in folk dance and nonprofit administration, Theresa is excited to take on this role, bringing energy and a deep love for the organization’s mission.
“It’s an honor to serve BCCDS in this capacity,” said Theresa. “I’m eager to continue the incredible work Joe has done and to help guide BCCDS to a vibrant future.”
As Theresa steps into her new role, she has resigned from her position as President of the Board of Directors. Nathan Wilson, a long-time staff member current Board Vice President, will assume the role of Board President.
“Joe’s leadership has been the heart of BCCDS for over 30 years,” said Nathan. “We are excited for Theresa to lead us forward and know her passion and dedication will help carry Joe’s legacy.”
